“growing up.”

I have a lot of growing up to do.  I realized that the other day inside my fort. – Zach Galifianakis

growing up is a subject i’ve given a lot of thought to recently.  in 5 and a half short months, my life will take on a whole new meaning and with that comes a slew of new responsibilities.  i will be responsible for another human life, one which will be entirely dependent on me for nourishment, comfort, warmth, and safety.  is this growing up?

You are young only once, but you can be immature forever. – my dad

i think there is a very distinct difference between taking on and fulfilling responsibilities and “growing up”.  i have a husband, a dog, a tiny baby on the way, bills, payments, etc.  do i feel like an adult?  HECK NO.  do i still play video games, eat pizza in bed, goof off, and watch cartoons?  HECK YES.  this concept of “growing up”, whatever that actually means, is for the birds.  one can be responsible and have fun.  care for your child, nurture them, watch them grow, and, when they’re old enough, build forts with them.  get down on the ground!  play!  explore!  finger paint!  i think it is important to maintain a sense of wonder, for your sake and your child’s.

i’m not really sure where i’m going with this or if it makes any sense.  it’s just something that’s been on my mind a lot.  if i figure out a way to better articulate these thoughts, i will edit this post.  if i don’t come back to this, it’s because i stopped dwelling on it and built a fort instead.

  1. “You are young only once but you can be immature forever.” Stay young by living each day to the fullest. Stay young by keeping an open mind to new ideas and thoughts. Stay young by embracing the joys your family gives you and reveling in the wonderment as you baby grows and develops.

  2. I can’t wait for the excuse to play with legos and action figures again! Or dolls… or.. whatever it is that little girls play with.
Regardless of the sex of our kid, we’re getting a full set of star wars toys!

    • I was a little girl once. I loved legos! So they’re a go either way. And if you think about it, Barbies are just action figures with boobs.

I’m down with the Star Wars toys for either gender! I always have and always will love Star Wars (New Hope, Empire, and ROTJ ONLY), but you know this.

  3. hahaha–Travis, comment left in true Douthit-family style! Brian would be proud!

Sara, I just wanted to drop by and tell you how much I LOVE reading your blog.
